About Kathryn

Kathryn is currently employed at a Tasmanian college as an Art teacher in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography and Ceramics. She sat on the Sawtooth ARI board for 3 consecutive years. She is currently the President of the Tasmanian Art Teacher’s Association. She has been teaching for 7 years and moved to Tasmania in 2014 from NSW. She received a BA of Fine Arts & Secondary Education through the University of Newcastle, graduating in 2014 with a major in Printmaking and a minor in Sculpture. In 2017 she undertook BA/Honours in Fine Arts through the University of Tasmania in Textiles and Drawing. The project she created throughout her Honours year focused on her own female lived experience. She looked at themes of intergenerational knowledge within the women in her family through craft and needlework. This project consisted of hand stitched embroidery into tablecloths and other traditional objects that were made by her grandmother and great-grandmother. During her time in Tasmania, she has been fortunate to be involved with multiple group shows, a finalist in the National Works on Paper Prize in 2016, Marie Ellis Drawing Prize in 2018 and the Tasmanian Women’s Art Prize in 2019. A highlight of her artistic career to date has been participating in the MONA FOMA exhibition Art of the Body, in 2019, where she was given access to the Menzies’ Centre library of human specimens. Since completing her Honours in 2017 she has been engaging in much experimentation in both materials and themes. More recently Kathryn has been learning about Tasmania’s native orchids and the current threats they face.
